The University is seeking applications from colleagues across the University who are keen to develop their careers further by undertaking a 6 year secondment to the role of Research Dean (Heritage and Creativity). This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a key academic leadership role, to provide a vision for the research theme, and to utilise strong interpersonal and team-building skills to align and motivate staff at all levels to achieve the University’s strategic ambitions in the Heritage and Creativity theme.
The University of Reading’s Strategy for 2026 sets out an ambition to be counted among the very best universities in the UK and internationally. The four research themes - Agriculture, Food & Health; Environment; Heritage and Creativity; and Prosperity and Resilience – are critical to that vision, and to the university’s research identity.
The Dean will play a key role in engaging colleagues in focusing on the contemporary global challenges and promoting public debate on issues. Equally to enable work with many local, national and international partners including schools, businesses, government, NGOs and other researchers to contribute to social diversity and wellbeing, economic growth and creative enterprise.
Research in the Heritage and Creativity research shines a spotlight on the past and reflects on the values of arts and humanities research to the people of today. The Research Theme encompasses c. 170 researchers in 9 research divisions (Art; Archaeology; Classics; English Literature and Language; Film, Theatre, and Television; History; Modern Languages and Linguistics; Philosophy; Typography and Graphic Communication) across four schools. Recent years have seen significant successes with regard to growing research income across the theme, and with regard developing partnerships with external organisations, most notably the British Museum. Other major initiatives include the development of a platform for Digital Humanities. The development of these partnerships and projects, and building on them to strengthen the quality, reach, and visibility of research across the theme will be a key focus for the Research Dean (Heritage and Creativity).
The Dean will contribute to University-wide strategic research leadership as a member of the University Committee for Research and Innovation and to the wider leadership of the University as a member of the University’s Leadership Group.
Following the REF submission in March 2021, the University will embark on the development of a “2026 Research and Innovation Plan”, to implement the priorities of the University’s Research and Innovation Strategy. The appointed Dean will be expected to actively participate in these discussions and in supporting the implementation of the wider University Strategy.
Candidates for the position of Research Dean are expected to have relevant and recent experience of academic leadership and managerial experience within the University of Reading or elsewhere, a track record of research achievement and an active research agenda.
The Dean will be required to work effectively and collaboratively with a range of stakeholders; Research Deans, Professional Service staff in various Functions (for example, Research and Enterprise Services, Planning and Strategy Office, Marketing, Communication and Engagement), Research Councils and External bodies relevant to their theme.

Appointing salary for the role: Professorial Zone 2, Pt1 (unless appointed candidate is on a higher salary, in that instance the person will move into the role on their current salary) + temporary allowance of £8,250 per annum (pro-rata where appointments are made on a part time basis).
