The Department of Philosophy at the University of Reading seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work for two years on an interdisciplinary research project funded by the John Templeton Foundation, entitled “Mistakes in Living Systems: A New Conceptual Framework for the Study of Purpose in Biology”.

The project will be conducted within the larger, multi-year, multi-million-pound research program funded by the Foundation, involving research teams in various countries: “Agency, Directionality, and Function: Foundations for a Science of Purpose”.

The Fellow will conduct research within a small interdisciplinary team of philosophers and scientists, led by Prof. David Oderberg as Principal Investigator. The team will work within a cluster of teams researching related topics, thus giving valuable opportunities for collaboration.

The position is for a fixed period of 2 years from 1 January 2022 until 31 December 2023. The successful candidate will:

  • have a PhD in Philosophy, preferably in one or more of the following areas: philosophy of biology, metaphysics (in particular Aristotelian), philosophy of science
  • have a strong interest in the connections between philosophy and science
  • be able to work effectively as a team member within an interdisciplinary group
  • enjoy discussing ideas with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, especially the natural and social sciences

They will preferably:

  • have a record of publication
  • have some experience in conference presentation and/or organisation
  • have experience of light administrative roles within a previous department
  • have teaching experience at undergraduate level
  • have IT skills relevant to website, blog and video hosting
