Research Assistant in Palaeofire Meta-Analysis and Modelling to work as part of a dynamic team studying land-atmosphere interactions in the past, present and future.

The post-holder will be employed as a Research Assistant in Palaeofire Meta-Analysis and Modelling on the ERC-funded project “Unlocking the past for a clearer future (GC2.0)” which examines the two-way interaction between the terrestrial biosphere and climate on palaeo-timescales in order to realize the full potential of palaeoclimate research to improve our understanding and modelling of climate and environmental change. The post involves providing research support for the statistical analysis and modelling of palaeodata on vegetation-fire interactions, including obtaining and processing modern and palaeoenvironmental data on climate, vegetation and fire and joint analysis of these data using advanced statistical techniques. Further duties will involve the development of numerical models to describe the two-way interactions between fire and vegetation and application of these models to understand past changes in fire regimes.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Academic qualifications in geography, ecology, environmental physics or a related subject at least to MSc/MA level;
  • High-level of programming skills, including experience with R, Python or Fortran;
  • Analytical skills, including experience in statistical analyses, including constrained regression and generalised linear or additive models;
  • An interest in climate change, fire ecology and palaeoenvironments;
  • Previous experience of working in a research environment;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to work to tight deadlines and as part of an international team.
