An opportunity to bring strong scientific programming and data analysis skills to a variety of investigations in collaboration with a thriving remote sensing group focussed on climate science.
We seek a skilled scientific programmer or data analyst to work collaboratively with an established team using Earth Observation (remote sensing) to address problems in climate science. The post-holder will work across ongoing projects on a variety of tasks involving data processing, analysis and visualisation, making coding contributions (Python, scripting) to specific scientific investigations and publications. We seek someone who can blend coding ability with quantitative skills, and interest or knowledge in remote sensing or climate science would be an advantage. The role is collaborative, and requires an effective communicator and enthusiastic problem solver.
If appointed at the higher grade, the post-holder will have additional strategic responsibilities, relating to developing the programming, online data dissemination and communication capabilities of the group in sustainable directions. The post-holder will then also be expected to make significant contributions to gaining funding through grants, including leadership of specific proposals.
This varied, flexible role is located in the University of Reading’s world-class Department of Meteorology, specifically in the Earth Observation and Space research area. The team with whom the post-holder will work is well-established with good gender balance. Led by Prof. Chris Merchant, the team works extensively with space and meteorological agencies internationally, as well as colleagues throughout the UK in the National Centre for Earth Observation. The team’s primary expertise is thermal (infra-red) remote sensing, rooted in the physics of observations. Our applications in climate and environmental sciences involve analysis of a wide variety of geophysical data and some physical modelling. The role therefore offers opportunities to deepen the candidate’s knowledge across a range of topics, while contributing to the science of a number of ongoing projects.
