We have an exciting opportunity for a person to work within a laboratory stores environment to join the forward-thinking Technical Services Operations team at The University of Reading as a Stores Technician.

Our Technical Service teams are built from people with different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect delivering the technical foundation for teaching, learning and research success. As a founding signatory to the Technician Commitment initiative led by the Science Council all technicians in Technical Services at the University are now ensured of visibility, recognition, career development, sustainable technical skills and effectiveness.  

We require a hardworking, methodically minded, self-motivated and enthusiastic team member who engages with the ethos of Technical Services at the University. As a Stores Technician within the Operations Team, you will provide assistance in the day-to-day running and organisation of the storage requirements and expectations. This includes receiving and delivery of services such as gas bottles, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, chemicals and the general storage of goods and equipment. You will also support projects within Operations to enable delivery and enhancement of service plus general area housekeeping within the Stores Operation.

This is a varied and essential post with core duties and skills involving:
•    Stock control including ordering, receipt, waste processing, management and delivery of laboratory goods.
•    The ability to work as part of a team using effective communication skills allied with organisational ability and enthusiasm.
•    Knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety.

Training will be provided but it is expected that criteria in the person specification is met

You will have:
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills; particularly about technical terminology in areas of responsibility.
•    Good working knowledge of health and safety policy and procedures affecting self and others
•    Proven experience of working with specialist technical equipment in either a laboratory, or stores environment.
•    The ability and carry out straightforward duties, specialist tests and technical procedures, following clear guidelines and procedures e.g. recording of information, receipting goods, stock control, supply of laboratory glassware, maintenance of storage areas, laboratory waste disposal.
•    Some relevant work experience in a laboratory or stores environment.
•    Experience of meeting the needs of customers
