Fixed term position (for up to 24 months, depending on start date) to participate in the UrbanFluxes, DARE, and CSSP- China research projects and other complementary urban climate/meteorology projects.

The main goal of the work will be to undertake model testing, development, application and evaluation for urban areas. The post will be based in the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, UK but will involve working with others internationally.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the modelling, evaluation, application and analysis of urban atmosphere exchanges (e.g. sensible heat, latent heat flux and anthropogenic heat fluxes, boundary, radiation) using urban land surface models (e.g. SUEWS, JULES/MORUSES, SLUCM, BEP/BEM, etc) offline and online.
  • Undertake modelling for future scenarios and understand potential climate service needs
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with project partners to facilitate cross disciplinary research with the international and interdiscplinary partners
  • Lead/participate literature reviews
  • Contribute to maintenance and analysis of observations (e.g. radiative fluxes, surface temperature, sensible and latent heat fluxes, boundary layer height, etc) using e.g. ceilometers, scintillometers, radiometers, crowd sourced data, satellite sensors etc)
  • Prepare papers and reports to achieve milestones and deliverables (journal articles, conference presentations, materials for workshops etc), often with tight deadlines in collaboration with project partners

 

You will have:

  • Experience of data processing and modelling for example for meteorology, hydrology and/or environmental science
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, R, Fortran and/or MatLab
  • PhD in an appropriate subject (e.g. meteorology, climatology, environmental science, physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics, physical geography)
  • Good oral and excellent written english skills
  • Computing and data management skills
  • Ability to prioritise urgent/ long term goals and to juggle tasks as priorities change
  • Ability to work well with others and independently
  • Good problem solving skills (e.g. instrument, programming problems)
  • Ability to communicate and work with project participants and stakeholder
  • Ability to keep the relevant people informed of the status of tasks and things that may require attention
  • Ability to travel to various sites
  • Ability to deal with respond to instruments needs at odd times (e.g. weekends)
