We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who is self-motivated, can work well within a small team and is capable of engaging effectively with wider colleagues, business partners and clients. There will be the opportunity for some teaching and peer mentoring to support TSBE research activities. The Research Fellow will work for the ongoing research project on the topic of workplace performance assessment associated within the TSBE centre and a project titled ‘Low carbon climate-responsive Heating and Cooling of Cities (LoHCool)’ ( funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council ( EPSRC). 

It is essential that the appointee has excellent numerical skills and hands-on skills of using computer software packages such as EnergyPlus, Matlab and statistical analysis package software. The appointee is expected to demonstrate the potential to produce journal papers in association with others. Good presentation and communication skills are expected.  The appointee is required to meet tight deadlines while providing a helpful and friendly service.

The appointee is expected to maximise and promote the impact of EngD research previously funded by EPSRC in the area of:  ‘Workplace occupancy study to assess the effects of indoor environmental quality factors upon occupant well-being & performance post occupancy’. This will include writing publications and the development of guidelines for use in the relevant industry guidance e.g. BCO (British Council of Office), CIBSE (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers).

The appointee is also expected to develop a reduced order model for the heating and cooling energy in associated with climate and occupancy behaviours in a district scale; and provide reengineering retrofit strategies for the Chinese existing building stock.  

You will have:
  • Experience of managing your own research project and stakeholders
  • Capability to carry out post-doctoral level research and write for publications
  • Excellent skills in statistical analysis;
  • In-depth knowledge in workplace performance;
  • Excellent skills in computer simulations and modelling;
  • Experience of using computer software, e.g. EnergyPlus,  Matlab, SPSS/ R
  • A PhD or equivalent in building physics/engineering science/building services;
  • A broad knowledge of interpretive research methodology;
  • Excellent communication skills.
