The School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences is delighted to invite applications for two fully funded Graduate Teaching Assistantships in Psychology, Neuroscience, Clinical Language Sciences, or Linguistics.

These are exciting roles which will allow the post holders to study for a PhD in a related subject whilst contributing to student learning, undertaking teaching activities in the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences.

The PhD research project associated with these posts should be aligned with the expertise of our research. The School is particularly strong in the areas of Psychopathology and Emotional Disorders, Affective and Cognitive Neuroscience, Personalised Nutrition, Motivation and Behaviour Change, Perception and Action, Cognitive Control, Language, Linguistics, and Bilingualism, and Clinical Language Sciences (https://www.reading.ac.uk/pcls/). The GTA is named in honour of Professor Magdalen Vernon (1901-1991) who was the first female Head of the then Department of Psychology at Reading.

Housed in state-of-the-art facilities, the School has established itself as a leading centre for research. The School was ranked 23rd in the UK within its unit of assessment in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Overall, 99% of our research was rated as internationally excellent and/or world leading. The successful candidates will join a thriving postgraduate research community of more than 70 PhD students who benefit from excellent support and resources from the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences (https://www.reading.ac.uk/pcls/) and membership of the University Graduate School (http://www.reading.ac.uk/graduateschool/).  


The posts are available normally for a fixed period of 4 years, during which the post holder must be registered as a full-time doctoral student, and they will be paid a salary and stipend per annum and have PhD fees waived. The University will meet the cost of PhD tuition fees.

You will have:

  • A good (1st or 2.1) first degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Linguistics or a related subject
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate complex theories and ideas in an engaging way that is easy for students to understand
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workloads, including balancing PhD studies with GTA responsibilities during term-time
