Job Description
We are seeking to appoint a Programme Manager to provide day-to-day programme management and co-ordination of the UK National Climate Science Partnership (UKNCSP). As the UKNCSP Programme Manager, you will be responsible for the coordination of governance processes, organising responses to funding calls, organising programme events, and monitoring UKNCSP projects. The Programme Manager will attend meetings of the UKNCSP Resource and Strategy Group, which is the key governance board for its activities. The postholder will work to identify new opportunities for improved coordination and impact of the activities within the UKNCSP, including convening and supporting meetings of existing and emerging projects. The postholder will be based in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) at the University of Reading.
The UK National Climate Science Partnership draws together the climate research activity of the Met Office and six NERC-funded Research Centres (British Antarctic Survey, British Geological Survey, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, National Centre for Atmospheric Science, National Centre for Earth Observation, National Oceanography Centre) to provide the foundations to enable the UK to be a global leader in climate science for solutions to tackle climate change and its impacts. Collectively, these institutes deliver the majority of the sustained, large-scale climate science conducted by the UK, and serve as focal points for much of the UK’s academic climate research. UKNCSP will undertake actions that optimally coordinate and leverage this capability to deliver enhanced large-scale science and the production of climate evidence for Government, devolved administrations, industry and other key stakeholders.
Flexible, resilient, and adaptable, you will have a delivery-focused mindset and have the ability to take ownership of tasks and act independently using your own initiative to progress work activity. You will have:
- Experience in managing a large programme of work, and knowledge of project and/or programme management
- Experience of working in a research environment and of supporting people in the development of research orientated projects
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to proactively make and build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
- A degree (or equivalent experience)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The postholder will report directly to Prof Len Shaffrey in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of Reading, and will work very closely with the two UKNCSP co-directors (Prof Michael Meredith from the British Antarctic Survey, and Dr Matt Palmer from the Met Office). The postholder will also work closely with a UKNCSP Knowledge Integration Officer working at the Met Office.
