The Department of Geography and Environmental Science are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Physical Geography (Full Time – Teaching and Research) who has specific expertise in one or more of the following: hydrology, climatology, biogeography, geomorphology, soil science, or geology. We are particularly interested in individuals who use remote sensing, geographical information systems, numerical analysis, AI/machine learning techniques and/or numerical modelling in their research. Candidates must have a strong background in Physical Geography, be familiar with core concepts and methodological approaches, and be able to contribute to the research excellence within the department. They must also be capable of taking an interdisciplinary approach, to support students studying our BSc Human and Physical Geography Programme. We seek to appoint a candidate aspiring to teaching and research excellence, who can contribute to our field-, computing-, and classroom teaching across all levels, support doctoral training programmes, prepare high-quality grant applications and publications, and undertake outreach activities.

The post holder will report to the Heads of Department and be assigned a mentor who will provide advice during the probationary period of their appointment.

You will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent level of experience in Physical Geography, or a related subject

  • A track record of research attainment and a proven ability to produce excellent research publications

  • Experience of grant application preparation, and an ability to secure research grant funding

  • Commitment to University level teaching and to working effectively and collaboratively with colleagues in the Department and wider University

  • Experience of undergraduate teaching in Physical Geography or a related subject

  • Experience in the application of quantitative techniques (e.g. remote sensing, geographical information systems, numerical analysis, AI/machine learning techniques and/or numerical modelling) in Physical Geography

  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective teaching in Physical Geography, including large classroom, field class, and computer practical teaching.
