Job Description

The University of Reading (UoR) Examinations team organises over 50,000 candidate sittings per year for approximately 12,000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students. Currently the main examinations period for 2024/25 are January-February, May-June and August-September.

Examinations are held in multiple exam venues across the University's Whiteknights and London Road campuses and include large venues which can seat several hundred candidates. A team of around 150 invigilators is required (consisting of Senior Invigilators, General Invigilators and Special/Complex Arrangement invigilators) to ensure that the examinations run smoothly and that the University’s assessment procedures and regulations are strictly adhered to in all venues.

As a Senior Invigilator you will take the lead on day-to-day provision of professional high-level invigilation services for examination sittings. You will be an experience invigilator, reliable and punctual, be able to work to set procedures with accuracy, remain calm under pressure and have experience leading a team. You will also have excellent interpersonal skills in working with a wide range of staff and students, and experience of handling challenging and emotive situations.

Previous experience of invigilation is essential and all invigilators are required to attend examination and First Aid training prior to undertaking the role.

Due to the nature of the work involved, students currently registered on taught postgraduate or undergraduate programmes at the UoR are not eligible to apply.


You will have: 

  • Previous experience as an exams’ invigilator in a school or university setting and for in-person examinations.
  • Knowledge of assessment/examination processes in higher education or another context.
  • Demonstrable experience of proactively managing diverse teams of staff in an operational context.
  • Knowledge of what constitutes good service in relation to examination venue operations and invigilation.
  • Demonstrable experience of handling confidential information and ensuring appropriate audit trails.
  • Excellent leadership, organisation and time-keeping skills.
  • A calm and professional manner and ability to work under pressure with a service-led focus.
  • A strong focus on attention to detail and high-quality output.
  • Availability to work all the exam periods and for full days
