Job Description

Join NCAS-CMS to provide and support HPC services for UK environmental science research and the NCAS Science Strategy.  You will be closely involved in both computational and data science elements with a primary focus on testing and support of numerical modelling systems and related codes on a range of computational platforms that include, but that is not limited to, ARCHER2, JASMIN, UK Met Office, the AI Research Resource (AIRR) platforms, EuroHPC, and a UK Exascale platform.  This is a great opportunity to collaborate and develop relationships with weather and climate scientists, research software engineers, and computational modellers from partner organisations.

You will:

  • Provide support for the research community
    • Installing underpinning software on current HPC and emerging Exascale systems
    • Porting, optimising and debugging software 
    • Resolving specialist user queries
    • Maintaining, developing, and running modelling workflows
    • Represent NCAS-CMS at national and international conferences


  • Support user services
    • Developing and maintaining data management services
    • Maintaining and developing outward facing software systems   


  • Manage CMS internal infrastructure
    • Improving the CMS web presence, including the development and deployment of container based data services.
    • Working with CMS group members to produce documentation and showcase recent work.


You will have:

  • Programming in at least one of these languages: FORTRAN, C, C++, Python.
  • Use of modern software engineering practice
  • Bachelor in a numerate degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of HPC computation issues: optimization, scalability etc
